BANG & OLUFSEN BEOCORD 9000
(DENMARK 1982)
To hear music reproduced accurately on cassette in your home is one pleasure serious listeners have always been denied until the introduction of the Beocord 9000 in 1982. With the Bang & Olufsen Beocord 9000 you can faithfully reproduce the wide dynamic range of a live performance. So much that it's impossible to pick the difference between the record and recording. The Beocord 9000 incorporates a unique Computer Controlled Calibration system, the Bang & Olufsen HX Professional Recording System and single touch operation. The Beocord 9000 calibrates to any cassette before recording in just nine seconds. Bang & Olufsen have developed a Computer Controlled Calibration system which optimizes the performance of any tape. Simply insert any tape and the Beocord 9000 proceeds to set the appropriate bias, sensitivity and equalization. The specifications for types of tape you use frequently can be placed in the memory and recalled instantly making future calibration unnecessary. And that's not all, in the calibration process the Beocord 9000 also measures distortion and sets its record level meters according to the characteristics of the particular tape you are using, assuring you of a recording free of audible distortion. The Beocord is one of the first cassette decks in the world to incorporate HX Professional. Not since the invention of Dolby NR has such a significant improvement in cassette performance taken place. Even Dolby Laboratories agreed. Overall dynamic range is increased by up to 10dB. Definition of bass frequencies is audibly superior. Frequency response with any tape is +/-1.5dB from 20 to 20000Hz with a S/N ratio up to 80dB with Dolby C NR!. The Beocord 9000 provides an electronically accurate real-time index to all tape locations regardless of type or length. To calibrate any cassette to a real-time index, simply press the GO button on the control panel. The most important part of the system is the micro-computer. The micro-computer carries out all calculations and controls the minute and second readings on the display. The computer program contains 3 tables, one for tape thickness compiled on the basis of practical experience. (Large number of cassettes on the market have been carefully measured at the Bang & Olufsen laboratory to ensure accurate time indication). If that's not enough, the Beocord 9000 is furnished with a specially recorded test tape which permits you to verify the accuracy of the tape head's azimuth adjustment. The fabulous design belongs to Jakob Jensen. Technical data: Wow and flutter: 0.045% WRMS | Frequency range: 20-20,000 Hz +/-1.5dB (All Quality Types), Metal 10-25,000 Hz +/-3dB | Dimensions: 53x13x30cm | Weight: 7.8 kg
BRAUN C 3 (GERMANY 1984)
The Braun C 3 cassette deck was introduced in 1984, and the same year the Atelier Hi-Fi system it was part of, received the prestigious "iF Design Award 1984" in the product design category. The design was the work of Peter Hartwein under the supervision of Dieter Rams. The housings of the Braun Atelier components are flat with uniform dimensions (44.5 cm wide and 7 cm high) and on the back of the devices, hinged metal panels cover the cables and plug contacts (the contact assignment is printed on the inside of the flap). All devices were produced in black and "crystal gray" (...white) and are also part of the Museum of Modern Art collection.
The Braun C 3 is a 3-Head deck with a 2-Motor mechanism mounted inside of a tray loading mechanism. It's a single capstan mechanism with Quartz-PLL Direct Drive motor operating at both 4.75 cm/s and 9.5 cm/s speed. The heads are of M&X type while for noise reduction it features both Dolby B and C circuits. Recording level can be adjusted with a rotary encoder with the help of a LED peak level meter while recordings can be made on all tape types: Normal, FeCr, Crome and Metal. Technical data:
Wow and Flutter: 0.03% (WRMS 4.75 cm/s) and 0.025% (WRMS 9.5 cm/s)
Signal to Noise ratio:
74 dB (Normal, Dolby-C, 4.75 cm/s) and 78 dB (Normal, Dolby-C, 9.5 cm/s)
76 dB (Chrome, Dolby-C, 4.75 cm/s) and 78 dB (Chrome, Dolby-C, 9.5 cm/s)
76 dB (Metal, Dolby-C, 4.75 cm/s) and (only) 72 dB (Metal, Dolby-C, 9.5 cm/s)
Frequency response:
20Hz ... 18/19/19/19kHz (Normal, Chrome, FeCr, Metal 4.75 cm/s)
20Hz ... 22kHz (Normal, Chrome, FeCr, Metal 9.5 cm/s)
Dimensions: 445 x 70 x 360 mm
Weight: 8.9 kg
This cassette deck can be found under the a/d/s brand name as well. These models were sold by a/d/s as Braun's USA distributor/partner. TDK has also used a BRAUN cassette deck in one of their TV commercials as seen here.
